FAQ

Your Questions, Answered

We know starting therapy raises a lot of questions. Here are the ones we hear most often - with honest, clear answers.

Getting Started

How do I know if therapy is right for me?

If you're experiencing persistent stress, sadness, anxiety, relationship difficulties, or simply feel stuck, therapy can help. You don't need to be in crisis to benefit - many clients come to therapy for personal growth and self-understanding. A good rule of thumb: if something is affecting your daily functioning or quality of life, it's worth exploring.

What happens in the first session?

Your first session (60 minutes) is a clinical intake - your therapist will ask about your history, what brings you in, your goals, and your current life circumstances. It's also your opportunity to ask questions and get a feel for your therapist's style. By the end, you'll have a sense of how you might work together and what to expect going forward.

How do you match me with a therapist?

When you reach out, our intake coordinator asks about your presenting concerns, preferences (e.g. therapist gender, cultural background, approach), and scheduling needs. We match you based on clinical expertise and fit. If after a few sessions you'd prefer a different therapist, we make that transition easy and judgment-free.

About Sessions

How long does therapy take?

It depends entirely on your goals and pace. Some clients find meaningful relief in 8–12 sessions. Others choose to continue for a year or more, especially when addressing deep-rooted patterns or trauma. We never push you to continue past your needs, and we regularly check in on your progress and goals.

Is everything I say confidential?

Yes - with three legal exceptions required of all licensed therapists: (1) imminent risk of harm to yourself or others, (2) suspected abuse of a child or vulnerable adult, and (3) court orders. Outside of these, nothing you share leaves the room. Your therapist will review these limits with you in your first session.

What is your cancellation policy?

We ask for 24 hours' notice for cancellations or rescheduling. Sessions cancelled with less than 24 hours' notice may incur a $75 late-cancellation fee. We understand emergencies happen and handle them with compassion on a case-by-case basis.

Practical Matters

Do you have evening or weekend appointments?

Yes. We offer appointments Monday through Friday until 7:00 PM and Saturday mornings until 2:00 PM. Telehealth appointments are available across the same schedule. Evening slots fill quickly - we recommend booking 1–2 weeks in advance if you need an after-work time.

Do you work with LGBTQ+ clients?

Absolutely and affirmingly. All Clearwater therapists are trained in LGBTQ+-affirming care. Several of our clinicians specialize in gender identity, coming out, transition support, and LGBTQ+ relationship dynamics. You will never be asked to change who you are - our goal is to help you be more fully yourself.
